Our last retiring staff member is Tammy Underwood! Here's what Tammy had to say about her retirement:
What inspired you to begin a career in education? My mother was a teacher. It was the only thing I've ever wanted to do. I knew when I was 5 years old what I was going to be when I grew up. I have never wavered from that. I've enjoyed every day of my career.
How many years have you spent in education, and which grades have you taught? I have spent 29 years in education. I have taught 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th, and title reading.
What led you to become a teacher? Teaching was always in my heart. I love to help the kids and see the excitement on their faces when they finally "get" something.
What accomplishment in your education career are you most proud of? I am very proud of receiving the Master Teacher award. I am also very proud of the school's accolades through the years. Weaubleau is an amazing school. The students work hard and take pride in their accomplishments. That makes a huge difference.
What has been the most rewarding part of working in education? I get rewarded every single day in my job. My very favorite compliment that I can receive is "My child loves coming to school". If I can make school enjoyable for the students they will be more apt to learn. Teaching 1st grade is amazing. You are teaching children to read. Something they will use for the rest of their lives. The progress they make from the beginning of the year until the end is astounding. I get to be part of that every day.
What challenges helped shape you as an educational leader? Challenges come in every form it seems. There are a lot of different state requirements that have changed many times through the years. What is a great practice one year will be changed the following year. You get very good at rolling with the punches and learning how to be flexible.
What advice would you give to future educators, leaders, or students? Future teachers- You are entering the most wonderful profession there is. You will have frustrations but you will also have some of the most amazing days ever. Don't sweat the small stuff. You're students look up to you. Students-You can do anything that you set your mind to. You are smart in ways that you don't even realize yet. Find your niche. No two students are ever the same so don't compare yourself to others. Just be you!
As you retire, what's next for you? I plan to substitute teach here in Weaubleau. That will keep me around the best people I know. I also plan to travel more and spend more time with my three babies (dogs). They will be happy that I am around more.

Today we are recognizing Nurse Susan, who is retiring this school year after being at Weaubleau for 13 years. Here's what Nurse Susan had to say when we asked her about her time as our school nurse!
I have wanted to be a nurse for as long as I can remember. I loved science and
found the human body fascinating. I also looked up to our school nurse and
visited with her often during high school to discuss all the options for jobs that
nurses have.
I have been a nurse since 1977 when I graduated with my Licensed Practical
Nursing certificate from State Fair Community College. I graduated from St.
John’s School of Nursing in 1990 with my R.N. degree.
I became the school nurse at Weaubleau in 2013 after working at the Hickory Co.
Health Department for 15 years. I wanted a position where I would be home
more with my 3 youngest children.
The most rewarding part I have had in my nursing career was working in labor and
delivery (15 years) and becoming the Nurse Manager and getting my Inpatient
Obstetrical Certification. Working with new moms and babies was always
exciting and heart warming.
The most challenges I have had as a nurse is seeing patients with illnesses and
diseases that had no hope of being cured. Learning compassion for them and
their families while they coped with their own acceptance of the diagnosis.
If anyone wants to become a nurse, do it asap after HS graduation. Get your pre-
requisites done before actual nursing school starts-it will make your life so much
easier. Research the school you want to attend to ensure your ideas line up with
the school’s mission statement and make goals that are realistic and attainable.
After 49 years of being a nurse, I will continue to substitute as needed here at
Weaubleau, make quilts, and enjoy not having a specific time to do anything. But
the saying is true…..Once a nurse, always a nurse.
